Testing the Hottest AI Girlfriend Apps — My Honest Review

The hottest thing in online dating right now isn’t a new swipe app. It’s AI girlfriends.  Yep, it’s digital companions you can build from scratch, flirt with, and (if you’re brave) take into not safe for work (NSFW) territory.

Curious, I downloaded the buzziest ones, from Candy AI and Soulmate to Paradot and Replika, to see what all the hype was about.

Some felt like playful practice partners, a safe space to test out flirty banter.  Others? About as emotionally deep as asking Siri to whisper sweet nothings.

And a couple got so convincing that I had to pause and remind myself, “Valentina, this is code, not chemistry. And you have a boyfriend.”

So why are men diving into AI dating, and what’s safe, fun, or a little too risky?  I tested the apps, hit the paywalls, and asked the uncomfortable questions so you don’t have to.

Best Sites to Create Your AI Girlfriend

Kupid.ai Review

When Candy.ai Felt Like Cotton Candy

If Candy AI were a dessert, it’d be spun sugar: pretty, flirty, and gone in two bites (Candy.ai Review).

  • Gorgeous images and quick video snippets
  • Beginner-friendly setup; no prompt wizardry needed
  • Chat that’s sweet but shallow

The strength of Candy.ai is visual play. You can dress her up, set the scene (beach, bedroom, balcony), and within seconds, generate images or even a tiny video clip (read more: How to Turn Candy.ai Into Your Dream Girlfriend in 3 Chats).

It’s addictive, like mood-boarding with someone who flirts back.

But the conversation? Think polite date energy. Fine for banter, not great if you want depth. It’s perfect for practicing light flirtation, not so much for soulful talks.

Soulmate and Paradot: Siri With Lipstick

Both Soulmate and Paradot gave me strong “AI assistant pretending to be romantic” vibes. The AI girlfriends here were functional and polite, but about as emotionally layered as asking your GPS to whisper sweet nothings.

These are the apps you try once and think: “Okay, that was cute,” before realizing you’d rather text a human friend.

Unless you’re brand-new to AI chat, they don’t really compete with the more immersive platforms.

Replika: The Therapist-You-Can-Flirt-With

Replika is the OG of AI companionship. It leans wellness-first with reflective chats, encouragement, and even light therapy-style conversations.

  • Calmer, slower pace
  • Can help with emotional labeling or practicing vulnerability
  • Still feels AI-ish, especially when conversations loop

Here’s the catch: it’s good if you’re lonely and want something soothing, but you may find yourself revealing more than you should.

And unlike a real therapist, Replika can’t push back when your thoughts spiral (and that can get dangerous).

The Apps That Go Deeper (and Sometimes Way Darker)

To be fair, apps like FantasyGF, GirlfriendGPT, and Promptchan go further than the ones I tested this round.

  • FantasyGF is closer to a dating simulator: you build her personality, style, and even the “relationship type.” Fun, cheeky, and yes, NSFW options exist. But the gamification (“XP for kisses”) felt too gimmicky for me.
  • GirlfriendGPT? That’s the wild west. Forty thousand characters, uncensored fantasies, sliders for POV, explicitness, and even video generation. It’s bold, immersive, and sometimes crosses lines I wish I hadn’t seen (read more: GirlfriendGPT Review: Is This NSFW AI Chatbot Worth the Hype (and the Cost)?).
  • Promptchan takes things in another direction entirely. Think anime aesthetics dialed up to eleven, with uncensored roleplay and user-driven scenarios that can get wild, fast. It’s creative and overwhelming (especially if you don’t know what you’re in for), and it’s definitely not for the faint-hearted (or anyone hoping for something wholesome).

Together, these platforms show the direction this niche is heading: hyper-customized, NSFW-first, with less pretense of “companionship” and a lot more straight-up fantasy fulfillment.

What the Research Says (and Why It Matters)

Here’s the nerdy-but-important bit: AI-generated dating content doesn’t really change how attractive we find someone, but it does make us trust them less.

And trust, not looks, is what actually makes you worth meeting in real life.

There’s also a darker side. Psychologists are warning about AI psychosis: cases where people mistake bots for sentient beings, fall into delusional thinking, or even develop unhealthy romantic obsessions.

That’s not me being dramatic. People have lost themselves—and even their lives—over this.

My Dating Coach Takeaway

Here’s the deal: AI girlfriend apps can be fun. They can help you:

  • Practice flirty banter without pressure
  • Warm up your social confidence before a real date
  • Play with roleplay and fantasy in a safe, private sandbox

But here’s where you need to check yourself:

  • If you’re skipping social plans to talk to “her”
  • If you’re comparing real women to your “perfect” AI girlfriend
  • If you feel more seen by code than by humans

…that’s your cue to pause.

Real women will challenge you. They’ll surprise you. They’ll sometimes disagree, go quiet, or need space. That’s part of intimacy.

AI gives you the illusion of intimacy without the risk, but also without the reward.

My Closing Thoughts

Testing these apps reminded me of this: it’s dangerously easy to settle for comfort when what you really crave is connection.

So by all means, play, practice, and explore.

Just remember that the point isn’t to “win” at AI dating. It’s to take what you learn here and bring it back into the messy, beautiful, unpredictable world of real human love.

Does that sound familiar to you? Have you tried any of these apps, or are you curious but cautious? I’d love to hear your take.

Krystyna has been writing about dating and relationships for over 15 years. She thought she’d seen it all. Then AI companions happened. She didn’t go looking for it. Readers kept asking, apps kept launching, so she did what she always does: downloaded them and started talking. Replika, Candy.ai, FantasyGF, GirlfriendGPT. She went in skeptical.
